The Korean American Students Conference (KASCON) is the largest and oldest student-run ethnic-specific conference. Held annually across different schools and regions, KASCON aims to inspire Korean American students to become leaders of their community by showcasing prominent Korean American figures in a variety of different fields and encouraging discussion and reflection on issues pertinent to our community. Since the first KASCON in 1987 at Princeton University, KASCON has touched the lives of thousands of Korean Americans. This year, KASCON is hosted at Yale University and is expected to bring in over 600 attendees.

Even after twenty-five years of KASCON, Korean American students continue to congregate in order to acknowledge the leaders of our time and to discuss the future direction of our community. We want participants to know that they are all relevant and active members of the community. Any and all interests, passions, and dreams provide the Korean American community with the breadth and drive that allow for it to truly grow. Each year students leave KASCON inspired by the stories of Korean American leaders who have followed their passions. It is, however, important for students to understand that successes of individuals is not what gives a community strength. It is the cooperation of innovative, interesting and dedicated members who use their strengths to create momentum for progress. Students must be able to see their endeavors as part of the greater movement dedicated to tending to the community’s needs. To grow as a community is powerful, because the great thing about a collective movement is that it benefits all members. My Moment, Our Movement.

The Mirae Foundation

Founded in 1991, the Mirae Foundation is an independent, non-profit foundation that focuses on developing leaders in the Korean-American community. The Mirae Foundation not only cohesively links the annual conferences together but also provides valuable guidance and oversight to the student organizers of the conference by acting as a permanent advisory body to the conference. The vast resources provided by the Mirae Foundation, such as contacts within the Korean-American community and logistical experience, ensure the success of the student-run conference.

Yale and New Haven

New Haven is a backdrop that does justice to the even more magical campus of Yale University. KASCON attendees will be charmed by the beautiful campus riddled with buildings that range from Gothic to Contemporary designs. There are relics of colonial times, as well as new contributions made by the world famous Louis Khan and Eero Saarinen. With its medieval courtyards, campus greens and public artwork, Yale University reliably maintains its charming atmosphere. From libraries to dorms, all the facilities of Yale are stunning in both their function and history. There are many classroom and lecture halls available for seminars and discussions. For larger assemblies and performances, there are chapels and performance spaces that serve as ideal conference locations.

Yale University is located in the historical and cosmopolitan New Haven. Equipped with both the comfort of a college town and the charisma of a city, New Have is accommodating to all, be it residents or visitors. As Yale President Richard C. Levin, a thirty-year resident of New Haven, notes, New Haven is “large enough to be interesting, yet small enough to be friendly.”

By day or night, New Haven is a busy town that is both family and college approved. From yarn stores to cozy cafes and dance clubs to fusion restaurants, New Haven is an animated destination that boasts a selection comparable to that of a large city. Between Yale Campus and the city as the backdrop, there are an infinite number of sites that will satisfy everyone’s interests. A day could be packed with a tour of Yale’s historic buildings and prestigious museums with stops along New Haven’s many cafes throughout the day, finishing off with light shopping and outing at one of the many theaters in the area. The options of attractions and activities are limitless. Visitors are sure to find the comforts of home, as well as the excitement of an escape!

Allen Zhang

Associate Director

Allen Zhang is a senior studying behavioral neuroscience. A lifelong (okay, 7 years, but that’s almost lifelong!) player of volleyball, he also enjoys miscellaneous other sports that involve high speed movement and detachment from the ground. He loves food and is in possession of a Snapple cap collection from which he enjoys presenting factoids to strangers. He does not believe in the existence of R.O.U.S.’s.

Yoonji Woo

Programming Group Manager

Hi, I’m Yoonji Woo, one of the Programming Directors of KASCON 25. Coming from a rather nomadic background (I’ve lived in France, Switzerland and Senegal other than Korea and the US), Koreans and their lives abroad have always been of great interest to me. I hope KASCON 25 will help all of us have a greater understanding of ourselves and the leaders of our community, and what our role should be as the future generation in charge of our community.
